Brain functional connectivity patterns in focal cortical dysplasia related epilepsy

چکیده

ObjectiveFocal cortical dysplasia (FCD) appears to be strongly associated with intractable epilepsy. Although patients FCD are candidates for epilepsy surgery, gray matter structural abnormalities can extend beyond the primary lesion, which makes surgery less effective. The objective of this study was evaluate functional connectivity patterns in explore underlying pathological mechanism disorder.MethodsA total 34 (14 men) and [mean age ± standard deviation (SD), 24.5 9.8 years; range, 8–47 years] age-matched healthy controls men, 24.6 9.7 years) underwent magnetic resonance imaging. Independent component analysis (ICA), seed-based connectivity, graph theory were applied analyze brain.ResultsPatients showed more connections among dorsal attention network, anterior default mode sensorimotor brain networks than based on ICA. Analysis between regions interest (ROIs) greater frontal temporal regions, but lower cerebellum regions. normalized characteristic path length significantly higher group patients, two groups no significant differences global or regional efficiency, clustering coefficient length.ConclusionsAnalysis ICA-derived ROI-based suggests that disrupted interactions dysconnectivity large-scale neural frontotemporal-cerebellar may contribute mechanisms FCD-related

Focal Cortical Dysplasia and Epilepsy Surgery

Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is the most commonly encountered developmental malformation that causes refractory epilepsy. With advances in neuroimaging techniques, in particular MRI, recent studies have revealed a higher prevalence of FCD than previously estimated and have improved the preoperative identification and classification of these abnormalities. However, MRI frequently does not show...

Multi-focal occurrence of cortical dysplasia in epilepsy patients.

This study describes the existence and the clinical and electrophysiological features of multi-focal cortical dysplasia in epilepsy patients. Five patients with intractable focal epilepsy are reported. All patients underwent invasive presurgical video-electroencephalography monitoring. Localization of dysplastic areas was based on high-resolution magnetic resonance scanning, surface and intracr...

Outcome of epilepsy surgery in focal cortical dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE To describe the outcome of surgery in patients with drug resistant epilepsy and a histopathological diagnosis of focal cortical dysplasia. METHODS AND SUBJECTS Analysis of histories and presurgical and follow up data was carried out in 53 patients with a histological diagnosis of focal cortical dysplasia. Their mean age was 24.0 years (range 5 to 46), and they included 14 children a...

Brain functional connectivity in sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy

Objectives To evaluate functional connectivity (FC) in patients with sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE) compared to healthy controls. Methods Resting state fMRI was performed in 13 patients with a clinical diagnosis of SHE (age = 38.3 ± 11.8 years, 6 M) and 13 matched healthy controls (age = 38.5 ± 10.8 years, 6 M).Data were first analysed using probabilistic independent component analys...

Surgical treatment of intractable epilepsy associated with focal cortical dysplasia.

Focal cortical dysplasias (FCDs) are congenital malformations of cortical development that are a frequent cause of refractory epilepsy in both children and adults. With advances in structural and functional neuroimaging, these lesions are increasingly being identified as a cause of intractable epilepsy in patients undergoing surgical management for intractable epilepsy. Comprehensive histologic...
